The week's thread — 23 August

11 rounds, ~€74.6M across 7 countries, 17–23 August. AI for domain-specific professional work accounts for six of eleven bets. France silent for 10 days. Oceanloop's €38.5M blended package dominates the capital total — but not the story.

Eleven rounds, approximately €74.6 million, across seven countries: 17–23 August. A single round — Oceanloop's €38.5 million blended financing package — accounts for more than half the capital total. Strip it out and the week's early-stage signal is roughly €36 million across ten rounds, a solid result for a post-Assumption week that started cold and warmed only on Wednesday-Thursday. Both numbers are true; neither alone describes the week.

AI for domain-specific professional work

Six of eleven rounds this week are bets on AI that does one specific professional task in one specific domain — not general-purpose AI, not horizontal infrastructure, but AI that knows what a psychiatrist does differently from an oncologist, and what an enterprise IT team does differently from a student. That specificity is not accidental; it is the investment thesis.

Medly AI (London, €6.9M, Seed; Felix Capital lead) builds an AI tutor for GCSE, A-Level, IB, and SAT syllabuses, used by 400,000 students in the UK with 74% reporting a grade improvement. The capital is earmarked for US entry via SAT preparation. Felix Capital, the lead, has now backed three ProYarn-covered Seed rounds in six weeks — Polysense (food manufacturing AI, July), Intropy (spare parts AI, July), and now Medly AI — each in a different sector, each an AI that automates what a trained professional charges premium rates to do.

Velatir (Odense, €5M, Seed; Spintop Ventures and Ugly Duckling Ventures co-lead) maps which AI tools enterprise employees are using in real time, on which devices, for which tasks, and lets IT and compliance teams govern that usage without blanket prohibitions. The Seed funds quarterly European office openings through December 2027, starting in Stockholm on 1 October and confirmed next in Paris. The company was founded in 2025; this pace is ambitious.

Aisel Health (Copenhagen, €1.7M, Pre-Seed; Caesar Ventures lead) builds an AI clinical context system for psychiatrists — surfacing structured insights from patient history, interview recordings, and prior documentation at point of care, with no patient data used to train models. UK private psychiatry is the first international market.

amber (Aachen, €7M, Series A; Ventech and NRW.Venture co-lead) operates an AI knowledge platform for SMEs, having rebranded from amberSearch to mark a deliberate shift from retrieval to task execution. The round funds Benelux expansion and a deeper proprietary AI Data Layer. Ventech co-led Naaia's Série A in July — an AI governance layer — and now doubles down on amber, an AI knowledge layer. Two complementary bets on the infrastructure required to make AI deployments usable and trustworthy in a European regulated market.

Eyedentity (Stockholm, €1.3M; Norrsken Launcher lead) uses AI to detect uveal melanoma from fundus images already taken by opticians, reducing false-positive referrals by 90% without any new equipment. A live pilot runs with the Synologen optician network.

Guideless (Vilnius, €1M, Pre-Seed; Superhero Capital lead) captures software workflows and converts them into narrated video training guides, editable step-by-step, maintained automatically as tools change. The investor roster includes the CEO and two co-founders of Vinted, which is a live paying customer. The longer-term thesis: the workflow database becomes structured context for AI agents.

No single investor backs more than one of these six rounds. The convergence is not a portfolio; it is a market signal.

The hardware bets

Two rounds address sensing and physical data rather than software intelligence, and both are genuine science stories.

Singular Photonics (Edinburgh, €1.85M; ACF Investors lead) builds SPAD image sensors — detectors that timestamp individual photons — enabling near-darkness imaging and millimetre-precise ranging beyond any standard camera. The 2024 University of Edinburgh spinout has products in nine countries, has doubled 2025 revenues in 2026 to date, and is approaching break-even. Dipesh Patel (former CTO of Arm) joins the board.

Oshen (Plymouth, €4.27M; Lunar Ventures lead) deploys constellations of wind-and-solar-powered C-Star robots for persistent ocean monitoring. Three C-Stars intercepted Hurricane Humberto at Category 5 in 2025; the company now builds 15 units every six weeks versus three years previously, with 100 more on order. A 50-robot North Atlantic constellation, ARIA-funded, targets early warning of Atlantic overturning circulation change.

The large-format rounds

Oceanloop (Munich, €38.5M) is the week's dominant headline by capital — but the number requires a plain reading. Approximately 85% of the €38.5 million is a €32 million EIB venture-debt facility amended in July 2026 from an original 2024 commitment; the equity from Hatch Blue and Stolt Ventures is real but undisclosed. The company farms Giant Grouper in a Kiel RAS facility (20–30 tonnes per year since April 2026) and targets a 250-tonne facility by end-2026 and a 2,000-tonne Gran Canaria site from 2029. The 250-tonne build is the proof; the Gran Canaria projection is still five years from construction start.

SnerpaPower (Reykjavik, €3.4M; Encevo lead) connects power-intensive industries to electricity markets in real time, managing more than 10 TWh of annual industrial consumption across approximately 15 Nordic sites. Encevo — a Luxembourg integrated energy operator with distribution network stakes — is the lead investor, implying a commercial relationship forming alongside the capital.

Birdsview (Bergen, €3.7M; six-institution Nordic syndicate) uses AI-interpreted ground-penetrating radar to scan concrete structures for subsurface damage without requiring specialist GPR expertise. Nine countries since its March 2026 commercial launch.

The week in numbers

~€74.6 million across 11 rounds in 7 countries. Oceanloop's blended package alone accounts for €38.5 million; the ten remaining rounds total ~€36 million.

Country breakdown: the United Kingdom leads by round count (3: Medly AI, Singular Photonics, Oshen, totalling ~€13M). Germany leads by capital if Oceanloop is included (€45.5M combined with amber), or sits level with the UK if it is not. Denmark contributes two rounds: Velatir and Aisel Health. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Lithuania each provide one.

Stage split: one Series A (amber), three Seeds (Medly AI, Velatir, SnerpaPower), two Pre-Seeds (Aisel Health, Guideless), five unstated (Oceanloop, Birdsview, Singular Photonics, Oshen, Eyedentity).

France has produced no qualifying Seed or Series A announcement for ten consecutive days since 13 August. The post-Assumption silence is consistent with prior years' late-August rhythm; la rentrée, now nine days away, is when the French pipeline historically restarts.

One investor thread is worth tracking forward: Norrsken appeared twice in this week's coverage in different programmes — Norrsken Evolve in Velatir's Seed, Norrsken Launcher in Eyedentity's first round. That does not constitute a coordinated thesis, but it names a network worth watching as European impact and AI investing intersect in the autumn filing season.
