Iceland's SnerpaPower closes €3.4M to help aluminium plants and data centres trade electricity like a financial instrument
A Reykjavik-based AI platform that connects power-intensive industries — aluminium and metals producers, data centres, power-to-X facilities — to electricity markets in real time, turning flexible consumption into a competitive and revenue-generating asset.
“Power-intensive industries can no longer treat electricity as a fixed operating cost. Companies that can adapt to changing market and grid conditions gain a significant competitive advantage.”
SnerpaPower (Reykjavik) has raised €3.4 million in a round combining €3 million in equity — from Encevo (lead), Crowberry Capital, and BackingMinds — with a €0.4 million Vöxtur grant from the Icelandic Technology Development Fund. Crowberry Capital and BackingMinds are both returning investors from SnerpaPower's 2023 seed of €2.2 million, which they co-led. Encevo — a Luxembourg-based integrated energy-transition operator — joins as the lead for the first time.
The company was founded in January 2022 by Íris Baldursdóttir (CEO), Eyrún Linnet, and Auður Vésteinsdóttir (CTO). Its platform integrates directly with the operations of power-intensive industries — aluminium and metals producers, data centres, and power-to-X facilities — connecting their electricity consumption in real time to wholesale markets, spot pricing, and ancillary services contracts. The stated goal: transform electricity from a fixed operating cost, managed in isolation from production decisions, into a dynamic input that can be adjusted, timed, and monetised against live market conditions.
Trading electricity like a financial asset
The thesis is direct, as Baldursdóttir stated at announcement: "Power-intensive industries can no longer treat electricity as a fixed operating cost. Companies that can adapt to changing market and grid conditions gain a significant competitive advantage." SnerpaPower's platform enables that adaptation. It connects operational data — production schedules, load flexibility windows, equipment constraints — with electricity market signals in real time, and helps operators capture value through demand response programmes, spot market optimisation, and ancillary services participation: markets that compensate industrial consumers for shifting or curtailing load on grid request.
The AI layer provides the forecasting — electricity price, production demand, grid conditions — and automates trade execution and load adjustment within operating parameters set by the customer's team. The company reports that the platform currently manages more than 10 TWh of industrial electricity consumption annually across approximately 15 Nordic industrial sites. For reference: 10 TWh represents roughly the annual electricity consumption of 2.5 million European households. That is an operational footprint, not a proof-of-concept claim, and it is the number that anchors the European expansion case.
Encevo as strategic lead
Encevo's position as lead investor is the most consequential structural element of this round. Encevo is not a financial venture fund: it is a Luxembourg-based energy group operating across electricity distribution, renewable generation, and electromobility, with subsidiaries in Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Benelux. Its investments are rarely divorced from commercial interest; a lead position in SnerpaPower almost certainly implies a commercial relationship in formation — one that gives the Icelandic company a credible door into industrial electricity users in markets well outside the Nordic base where Crowberry and BackingMinds can open doors.
The new capital will fund European market expansion and deepen the platform's forecasting and automation capabilities. The prior investors' return at a higher commitment level is a straightforward signal of continued conviction. The question the next 18 months will answer is whether the 10 TWh operational base, built in a Nordic industrial context where SnerpaPower has existing institutional relationships, can be replicated across Continental European customers — and whether Encevo's network is the key that opens that door.
