Aachen's amber raises €7M Series A to build the knowledge layer that lets AI act, not just answer
An Aachen-based AI knowledge platform for SMEs that indexes a company's documents, emails, and business systems — answering employee questions and, increasingly, completing work autonomously.
“AI's next evolution is not another chatbot. The future belongs to systems that understand business context, recognise user intent and autonomously complete work. That's exactly what we're building with amber.”
amber (Aachen) has raised €7 million in a Series A round co-led by Ventech and NRW.Venture, the venture arm of NRW.BANK, one of Germany's largest regional development banks. The company — founded by Bastian Maiworm, Philipp Reissel (CEO), and Igli Manaj — builds an AI knowledge platform for small and mid-sized businesses, and the round is an explicit step from retrieval toward execution.
Ventech is a returning investor. The Paris-based fund backed amber in its prior round — a €2.1 million raise in March 2025 — and is now co-leading the Series A alongside NRW.Venture. The combination of a pan-European generalist and a German regional development bank reflects both amber's ambition and its geography: Aachen sits at Germany's western edge, a few kilometres from the Belgian and Dutch borders.
From search to action
amber began as amberSearch — a tool that let employees query across a company's scattered documents, emails, and connected business systems in a single interface. The rebrand to amber marks a deliberate shift in framing: the product is no longer described as search, but as a knowledge layer oriented toward task completion.
CEO Philipp Reissel is explicit about the direction: "AI's next evolution is not another chatbot. The future belongs to systems that understand business context, recognise user intent and autonomously complete work. That's exactly what we're building with amber." The capital will fund a deeper AI Data Layer — a proprietary index of a company's business context — and tighter integrations with the ERP, CRM, and communication tools that SMEs actually run on. The longer-term goal is a platform that does not just surface information but executes tasks on behalf of the user.
Ventech's second enterprise AI bet in two months
Ventech's involvement carries a pattern worth naming. In July, ProYarn tracked the fund's lead on Naaia's Série A — a €6 million round for a Paris-based AI governance platform that monitors deployments against the EU AI Act in real time. Now Ventech is co-leading amber's Series A. The two investments are complementary bets on different layers of the same stack: compliance monitoring on one side, knowledge and action on the other. Both target European enterprises navigating regulatory and operational complexity simultaneously.
The Benelux expansion and the commodity risk
The immediate use of funds is geographic: European expansion starting with Benelux. Aachen's location makes the move sensible — the company is already proximate to the Dutch and Belgian markets, which share the German preference for structured, integrated enterprise software. Whether amber can build switching costs in those markets before the major ERP and productivity vendors ship native equivalents is the bet the Series A is funding.
That risk is the honest backdrop to this round. AI knowledge retrieval is attracting capital at every stage because every company has the same problem — fragmented information spread across too many systems — and because the problem is legible enough to demo. But foundation models are narrowing the gap between a purpose-built knowledge layer and a well-prompted general model. amber's answer is the proprietary data layer and integration depth that a general model cannot replicate without the same access. The next 18 months test whether SME customers adopt deeply enough to validate that claim.
