Munich's Oceanloop nets up to €38.5M to farm Giant Grouper at industrial scale in European waters
A Munich-based land-based aquaculture company that uses recirculating water systems to farm Giant Grouper — a high-value reef fish not previously cultivated commercially in Europe — at industrial scale, without ocean cages.
“This financing marks the beginning of Oceanloop's industrial scale-up. Together with Sander Aqua, we have spent more than a decade developing, operating and continuously improving land-based marine aquaculture systems. With Hatch Blue, Stolt Ventures and the European Investment Bank, we are bringing together specialist aquaculture investment expertise, decades of commercial seafood experience and long-term European growth financing.”
Oceanloop (Munich) has announced a financing package of up to €38.5 million to scale its land-based recirculating aquaculture system for Giant Grouper farming. The package combines equity from Hatch Blue (via its Blue Revolution Fund) and Stolt Ventures — the venture arm of Oslo-listed tanking and shipping group Stolt-Nielsen — with a €32 million European Investment Bank venture-debt facility whose terms were amended in July 2026, two years after the original facility was signed in October 2024. The equity portion is not separately disclosed.
The round's structure is worth naming plainly. Roughly 85 percent of the headline figure is debt, not equity: the €32 million EIB facility, now amended, constitutes the bulk of the capital. Hatch Blue and Stolt Ventures have committed real equity alongside it, but the amounts are unstated. This is not a standard venture round; it is a blended financing package of the kind the EIB deploys for capital-intensive European food and blue-economy infrastructure.
Farming Giant Grouper without ocean cages
Oceanloop's core technology is a land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) — a closed-loop facility that circulates and filters water to maintain precise conditions for fish growth, eliminating the environmental variables and disease risks of ocean cage farming. The chosen species, Giant Grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus), is one of the largest commercially valued reef fish, widely consumed in Asian markets and increasingly present in European luxury seafood. Before Oceanloop, Giant Grouper had not been farmed at commercial scale in Europe.
The company was founded in 2023 by Dr. Fabian Riedel, who has spent more than a decade on land-based marine aquaculture with co-developer Sander Aqua. Commercial sales began in April 2026 through sister brand Honest Catch, from an existing facility in Strande near Kiel producing an estimated 20–30 tonnes per year. The new capital targets a step-change: a 250-tonne production facility in Kiel, with construction scheduled to begin by the end of 2026, followed by a 2,000-tonne commercial facility on Gran Canaria, planned from 2029. Both projections are the company's own at pre-construction stage.
The EIB's involvement and what it signals
The European Investment Bank's presence in a Series-unlabelled round for a company founded in 2023 reflects its Blue Economy mandate and its appetite for capital-intensive food-production infrastructure that European venture alone would not finance at this scale. The EIB's July 2026 amendment to a 2024 facility — not an entirely new commitment — suggests a phased approach: the bank is deepening its exposure as construction timelines crystallise rather than backing the company at inception.
Hatch Blue, a specialist aquaculture investor, and Stolt Ventures, representing a long-established seafood supply-chain operator, supply the sector credibility alongside the bank's balance sheet. The investor combination covers the vertical: domain expertise, commercial distribution relationships, and patient public capital. What it does not cover is the operational execution of scaling RAS from 30 tonnes to 250 tonnes, which involves engineering, biological, and commercial variables that no balance sheet guarantees in advance.
Oceanloop's benchmark moment is not this announcement. It is the first reliable production run at 250 tonnes in Kiel — and whether a committed buyer beyond Honest Catch is already waiting for it.
