The week ending 2 August produced 14 rounds and approximately €123 million. The through-line is real enough to name: roughly €85 million — 69% of the total — went to companies that don't sell to end customers. They build the substrate that everything else runs on. The AI-powered application bets were present and active; they just spent the week at smaller cheque sizes.

The infrastructure cluster

Five rounds drove the week's capital concentration, each at a different layer of the stack.

ZuriQ (Zürich, €22.4 million, Seed; Quantonation lead, Forward.one, Extantia, Firgun Ventures) is an ETH Zürich spinout building 2D trapped-ion quantum processors — an architecture its founders argue scales qubit count with chip area rather than linearly, removing the ceiling they claim limits all conventional trapped-ion and superconducting designs. The week's largest early-stage round went to a company still at the nine-qubit demonstrator stage; Quantonation, one of the only specialist quantum VCs with the physics depth to evaluate competing architectures, appears in ProYarn's coverage for the first time.

Nuclear Turbines (Manchester, €17.5 million, stage unstated; IQ Capital lead, Rhapsody Venture Partners, Zero Carbon Capital, Empirical Ventures) emerged from stealth with a foundational round for a reactor design that feeds high-temperature gas turbines — the same turbine type used in jet engines — rather than the capital-intensive steam conversion systems that make conventional nuclear expensive. Target markets are data centres and industrial facilities needing reliable low-carbon power independent of grid access. IQ Capital, which backed QuantumDiamonds from Brainport's neighbour Cambridge earlier in July, led its second consecutive early-stage deeptech close in four weeks.

AI Infrastructure Capital AG (Pfäffikon, approximately €16 million, stage unstated; Valyou investment foundation anchor) is the week's structural outlier: a compute yield vehicle — not a typical VC-backed startup — that buys enterprise NVIDIA GPU servers, operates them in Iceland on renewable power, and rents compute on long-term contracts. Founded June 2026 by Cédric Waldburger and Roald Parmentier, with contracts reportedly already signed at launch. The anchor is a Swiss investment foundation rather than a venture fund, which marks this as an asset-backed infrastructure vehicle rather than a growth-equity bet.

Keiron (Eindhoven, €20.7 million, Series A; Invest-NL, DeepTechXL, Waves Capital co-leads) is a TNO Holst Centre spinout replacing stencil-based solder paste printing with a laser process — Laser-Induced Forward Transfer — that requires no physical stencil. The company claims the step responsible for over 70% of PCBA defects is eliminated rather than improved, with first-pass yield jumping from ~60% to above 95%. The AI hardware connection is structural: packages with up to 10,000 interconnects break conventional stencil printing; Keiron's digital process handles that density. DeepTechXL, which led the seed, returns as a co-lead. Announced Friday 31 July, published in today's edition after missing Saturday's brief.

Tiger Technology (Sofia, €8.7 million, Series A; 3TS Capital Partners lead) was founded in 2004 and raised its first institutional round 22 years later. Tiger Bridge manages unstructured data across on-premises and cloud as a transparent control layer, without migration or disruption. The commercial catalyst is AI readiness: enterprises need decades of accumulated unstructured data accessible to LLM infrastructure. Bulgaria's largest ProYarn entry since the desk launched.

The application layer

Nine rounds covered the territory the infrastructure is eventually used for.

Intropy (London, €9.5 million, Seed; Felix Capital lead, Quiet Capital, General Catalyst, firstminute capital) builds an AI operating system for spare parts distributors — pricing, inventory, obsolescence management — executing decisions inside customers' ERP systems rather than sitting above them. Felix Capital, whose portfolio has run to consumer brands, led an industrial AI round; the pivot signals where returns are migrating. More than $10 billion in spare parts demand processed since launch.

Ahead Health (Zürich, €8.7 million, stage unstated; 3VC and RTP Global co-leads) pairs advanced blood panels with whole-body MRI in 30 minutes, reviewed by a licensed doctor, reviewed by licensed physicians, delivered through a network of partner clinics rather than proprietary facilities. RTP Global returns, having led the January 2026 €5.1 million round; 3VC joins. Germany (Munich) and the Netherlands (waitlist) are the expansion markets.

DITTO (London, €5.2 million, Seed; FoodLabs lead, EKA Ventures returning) raised on a clinical trial — 88% symptom reduction across 40 women over three full menstrual cycles — for its PMS and PMDD supplement. By pharmaceutical standards, n=40 is a pilot; in the supplement market, it is more clinical evidence than most products will ever have. FoodLabs previously led Aardaia's oversubscribed Seed, applying the same evidence-first thesis to crop science; this is the same conviction applied to consumer health.

The remaining six: Atomic One (Málaga, €5.6M, Enterprise AI for Amazon brands; Arcano Partners). Beelzebub (Milan, €3M Seed, AI-powered honeypot cybersecurity; United Ventures). 5U AI (Munich, ~€2.9M Pre-Seed, freight forwarding AI; Emerge Capital). Sigvi (Vilnius, €1.2M Pre-seed, car rental aggregation; Superhero Capital). Apolownia (Paris, €1M Seed, blue carbon developer; LITA, Bpifrance). Kinematic Trees (London, ~€680K Pre-seed, robot-agnostic software intelligence; Haatch SEIS Fund, no named lead).

The week in numbers

~€123 million across 14 rounds in 9 countries. Switzerland led by capital with three rounds totalling approximately €47 million (ZuriQ, AI Infrastructure Capital AG, Ahead Health). The United Kingdom led by deal count with four rounds and approximately €33 million (Nuclear Turbines, Intropy, DITTO, Kinematic Trees). The Netherlands entered the month with Keiron's €20.7 million. France contributed a single round at €1 million — Apolownia's Seed — its quietest output since the routine began.

Stage distribution: five Seeds, four with unstated stage, three Pre-Seeds, two Series A. The two Series A rounds — Keiron and Tiger Technology — were both companies reaching their first institutional round years after founding, not fast-growth software startups.

Quantonation appeared in ProYarn's coverage for the first time, leading ZuriQ: a specialist quantum fund making a high-conviction early-stage call on an ETH spinout. DeepTechXL returned in Keiron having led the seed — conviction demonstrated across two consecutive rounds rather than asserted at close. RTP Global backed Ahead Health for the second consecutive close.
