Apolownia raises €1M Seed to build France's integrated blue carbon developer
An end-to-end developer of high-integrity coastal ecosystem restoration and blue carbon projects, combining satellite remote sensing, AI-powered MRV, geospatial analysis, and on-the-ground field operations.
“At a time when everyone is chasing efficiency and technology has never been more accessible, it is presence on the ground that makes the difference. By mastering the entire chain, we are our clients' single point of contact, from the field to the measurement of impact.”
Apolownia (Paris) has raised €1 million in a first Seed round via LITA (Lita.co), a French impact investment platform, with Bpifrance co-investing alongside undisclosed business angels and individual investors. The company was founded in 2024 by Théo Derache (CEO and co-founder). Apolownia develops end-to-end coastal ecosystem restoration and blue carbon projects, combining satellite remote sensing, AI-powered monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV), geospatial analysis, and on-the-ground field operations.
Owning the full chain
Most blue carbon developers operate at the structuring and aggregation layer — sourcing credits from third-party restoration projects and packaging them for corporate buyers. Apolownia's model is different: it controls the entire vertical, from field operations and species selection to satellite monitoring, biodiversity measurement, and carbon credit structuring. The company positions itself as a single point of contact for clients "from the field to the measurement of impact," in Derache's framing.
The theory behind the integrated approach is that credit integrity depends on what happens on the ground, and that a developer without direct field control is structurally limited in its ability to guarantee additionality, permanence, and co-benefits. Vertical integration also removes third-party dependency risk: if a field partner underperforms or exits, an aggregator has a problem; an integrated developer has a management decision.
The €1 million will fund scaling the end-to-end model, advancing the flagship Indonesian project, and building out the science and monitoring team.
BlueRizon: the first proof
The company's primary live project is BlueRizon, a mangrove restoration initiative in Indonesia targeting more than 4,000 hectares, with an official launch planned for Q3 2026. The project already involves more than 3,000 people and has stated potential to benefit more than 100,000 through coastal climate resilience improvements. Mangroves are among the highest-density carbon storage ecosystems on the planet — and deliver measurable co-benefits (coastal protection, fisheries support, biodiversity) that are increasingly relevant to corporate buyers operating under CSRD and SBTi commitments.
"At a time when everyone is chasing efficiency and technology has never been more accessible, it is presence on the ground that makes the difference," said Théo Derache. "By mastering the entire chain, we are our clients' single point of contact, from the field to the measurement of impact."
The round is modest — €1 million raised via a retail impact platform, with Bpifrance validating the institutional case at an early stage. Blue carbon has faced credibility pressure following investigations into additionality claims on Verra-certified projects; Apolownia's vertically integrated model is a structural response to that critique. Whether it holds under the operational weight of a 4,000-hectare Indonesian project — permitting, community relations, hydrological monitoring, biodiversity co-benefit measurement — is what BlueRizon's Q3 launch will begin to answer.
