Ambio raises €5.1M seed to trade recycled plastics the way commodities markets trade virgin ones
A Helsinki-based marketplace and principal buyer for recycled plastics that acts as the counterparty in transactions — sourcing, quality-verifying, matching, and delivering recycled materials to manufacturers — rather than just connecting buyers and sellers.
“When you're buying virgin plastics, you know exactly what you're getting. When you're buying recycled, you'll know if it works when it's running in your production line. Our goal is to predict if the material works or not before sampling even happens.”
Ambio (Helsinki) has raised a €5.1M seed round led by b2venture. Montis and existing investor Lifeline Ventures co-invest. The company was founded in 2023 by Tommi Bergström (CEO) and Elmo Pakkanen (CPO), both former Slush team members.
The problem Ambio is solving
Recycled plastics are cheaper and lower-carbon than virgin material — in theory. In practice, a manufacturer switching from virgin to recycled faces a quality-prediction problem that has no reliable solution in the existing market. Virgin polymer is standardised; recycled polymer varies by feedstock origin, prior use history, and processing method. A buyer placing an order cannot know whether the material will run cleanly on their production line until it actually does — at which point a failed run means scrapped product and a paused line.
That uncertainty keeps recycled plastics chronically undersupplied relative to demand, even as European manufacturers face tightening sustainability requirements and sustained cost pressure.
How Ambio trades
Ambio's differentiation is structural: it acts as a principal, not a broker or marketplace. The company sources material from recycled plastics producers across Poland, Romania, the Baltics, Germany, France, and the Benelux, performs its own quality verification, and takes the delivery commitment. The manufacturer buys from Ambio with a guarantee; Ambio manages the supplier risk.
The AI engine underneath is a proprietary dataset of material quality observations built from each transaction. Every delivery adds a data point — this material from this supplier in this condition ran at this quality level in this production process — which refines the compatibility predictions for future orders. The goal Bergström describes is explicit: predict whether a material will work before a sample is even shipped.
Teams in Helsinki, Berlin, and Stockholm support operations across the Nordics and the German-speaking market. A first hire has recently been made in France.
The round and the lead
b2venture leads, joined by Montis and re-investing Lifeline Ventures. Mathias Ockenfels, partner at b2venture, described the investment thesis around the compound moat: proprietary quality data, a principal model that builds trust on both sides of the trade, and an agentic engine that improves with each transaction. All three elements reinforce each other — the business gets harder to replicate the longer it operates.
The €5.1M funds platform development, expansion into additional polymer types beyond those currently traded, and geographic growth in Germany and the Nordics.
