CarbonFarm raises €7M Series A to scale rice methane carbon credits across three continents

CarbonFarm (Paris) has raised €7 million in an oversubscribed Series A led by Colam Impact, the impact investment arm of Sonepar holding company Colam Entreprendre. Participating investors include Proparco, Suma Capital, elea, Working Capital Fund, Albo, and Bpifrance. Existing backers Racine² (the co-investment vehicle of Serena and Make Sense) and Technmind renewed their positions. The company was founded in 2021 by Vassily Carantino (CEO) and James Hastwell (CTO), and had previously raised a €2.5M Seed in October 2023 led by Racine².

What CarbonFarm does

Rice farming generates methane at scale. Agriculture accounts for roughly 10% of global greenhouse-gas emissions; rice contributes a disproportionate share, particularly in Asia and Latin America where anaerobic flooding is standard practice. Reducing rice methane requires changing irrigation and soil management; farmers will change practice if there is a financial incentive.

CarbonFarm's model is to provide that incentive through carbon credits. The platform combines satellite imagery, machine-learning models, and greenhouse-gas accounting protocols developed in partnership with Cornell University, INRAE, and the European Space Agency to measure emission reductions at field level. Credits are certified through Verra and Gold Standard — the two dominant voluntary carbon market registries — and sold to enterprise buyers. Current clients include Mars Food, Diageo, Ebro, and Tilda, all of which have rice or grain in their supply chains and corporate net-zero commitments that make rice methane reduction directly attributable. The company operates across 19 countries on the same technical stack.

The round and what the syndicate signals

The €7M goes to scaling operations in Asia, Africa, and Europe, and deepening a footprint in Latin America. Colam Impact's lead is strategically legible: Sonepar, the industrial distribution group it sits within, has its own supply-chain decarbonisation obligations and a structural interest in credible carbon markets. Proparco, France's development finance institution, brings an emerging-markets mandate that aligns with where CarbonFarm's growth runway is longest. Suma Capital adds a Southern European impact lens. The overall syndicate — development finance, family-office impact, agtech-specialist seed investors — reflects CarbonFarm's positioning between early-stage technology company by age and enterprise-scale operator by client base and geography.

The 18-month test

CarbonFarm's credibility depends on its measurement methodology holding up to scrutiny. The voluntary carbon credit market spent 2022–2024 in a credibility crisis; forest credits bore the investigative brunt, and agricultural credits emerged relatively unscathed. That may reflect genuine methodological superiority over forest-based offsets, or it may reflect lower transaction volume and less investigative incentive. With a three-continent expansion now funded, CarbonFarm is about to generate the transaction volume that will test the claim seriously. Mars Food, Diageo, and the Verra registry will be among those watching; so will the development finance institutions that have staked institutional credibility on the round.
