Procuros raises €20M Series A to rebuild B2B trade's fax-era EDI infrastructure with AI

“B2B trade is still wired together with fax-era EDI protocols. Procuros is rebuilding that infrastructure for the autonomous-commerce era.”
Patrick Thelen — CEO, Procuros

Procuros (Hamburg) has raised €20 million in a Series A led by XAnge, with W23, Point Nine, Creandum, and b2venture participating. Founded in 2021 by Patrick Thelen (CEO) and Benjamin Bradford, the company builds AI-native B2B integration infrastructure for suppliers and retailers. Prior rounds: €1M pre-seed (2021) and €8.3M Seed (2022).

EDI: the problem that won't go away

Electronic data interchange is one of enterprise software's most durable frustrations. The technical standards — X12, EDIFACT, ANSI — were designed for the networked-computing era of the 1970s and 1980s, and the integration infrastructure built on them reflects that vintage: every supplier-retailer connection is a bespoke implementation, maintained by someone's IT team, using formats that differ between trading partners and across countries.

The consequences are measurable. A new supplier onboarding to a major grocery chain faces weeks of integration work before their first purchase order moves automatically. Invoice reconciliation errors — arising from format mismatches, version incompatibilities, or simple data entry — cost retail and manufacturing procurement teams significant processing overhead. Catalogue management across multiple retail partners requires manual synchronisation that introduces errors and delays.

AI-native integration replaces the VAN

Procuros's approach is to use AI — document understanding models, format translation, automated reconciliation — to replace the bespoke integration layer with a standardised platform. Rather than building and maintaining a custom EDI connection for each trading partner, suppliers connect to Procuros once; the platform handles format translation and reconciliation for every retailer they trade with.

"B2B trade is still wired together with fax-era EDI protocols," said Thelen. "Procuros is rebuilding that infrastructure for the autonomous-commerce era."

The €20M and what it builds

The Series A funds two things: product depth and market breadth. Product-side, the AI suite expands to cover more document types, more format variants, and more use cases (advance shipping notices, returns management, promotional data exchange). Market-side, the sales team grows to penetrate the retail and grocery vertical in Germany and across Europe — the two sectors where EDI volumes are highest and the pain of manual integration is most acute.

Creandum, which backed Jack & Jill in AI recruiting, adds horizontal B2B infrastructure to its European portfolio. Point Nine's continued participation from the Seed round is a retention signal: one of Europe's most demanding SaaS investors chose to follow on.
