The wire — 20 August 2026
Five rounds today, all from the same corner of the map — two from the UK, two from Denmark, one from Iceland — and no unifying sector thesis. August's continental quiet has now extended to seven days on the France desk; the post-Assumption calendar has yet to deliver a qualifying French-HQ raise. What the British Isles and Nordics have produced instead is a set of early-stage bets on AI in specific professional contexts: an exam tutor, an enterprise AI auditor, an industrial electricity trader, a clinical context engine for psychiatry. A hardware outlier — SPAD image sensors — rounds out the five. Today's brief also covers four rounds announced August 19 that the prior sweep missed; the fifth (Velatir) was published this morning as a Sifted exclusive.
Medly AI (London) closed a $8 million / €6.9 million Seed led by Felix Capital, with Eka Ventures, Ada Ventures, and four angels. Founded in February 2025 by Dr. Paul Jung and Dr. Kavi Samra — two UCL-trained doctors who left the NHS — the company runs a conversational AI tutor across GCSE, A-Level, IB, and SAT syllabuses that it says has been used by 400,000 students in the UK, with 74% improving at least one grade. The capital goes to US entry via SAT preparation. Felix Capital's lead is its third ProYarn-covered Seed lead in six weeks — after Polysense (food manufacturing AI, July) and Intropy (spare parts AI, July) — each in a different sector, pointing to a deliberate thesis around AI that automates what trained professionals charge premium rates to do.
Velatir (Odense) raised a €5 million Seed co-led by Spintop Ventures and Ugly Duckling Ventures, with Norrsken Evolve, the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark, and angels Jan Oberhauser (n8n) and Thomas Visti (former CEO of Universal Robots). Founded in 2025 by a team led by Michael Blicher Sørensen — a former Meta Data Center Security Lead and Danish Defence Intelligence Officer — the company gives enterprises a real-time map of which AI tools their employees are using, with governance controls built on European-owned cloud. Expansion targets: Stockholm office opening 1 October, then one new European office per quarter through December 2027.
SnerpaPower (Reykjavik) closed €3.4 million — €3M equity from Encevo (lead), Crowberry Capital, and BackingMinds, plus a €0.4M Icelandic state grant — to scale an AI platform that connects power-intensive industries to electricity markets in real time. The company, founded in 2022 by Íris Baldursdóttir, Eyrún Linnet, and Auður Vésteinsdóttir, reports that it currently manages more than 10 TWh of industrial electricity consumption annually across approximately 15 Nordic sites. Encevo's lead is the notable structural element: a Luxembourg integrated energy operator with distribution network stakes, not a financial VC — which implies a commercial relationship forming alongside the capital.
Singular Photonics (Edinburgh) raised £1.6 million / €1.85 million in an oversubscribed unlabelled round led by ACF Investors, with Wren Capital, Cambridge Angels, Scottish Enterprise, Quantum Exponential, and Old College Capital. The company is a 2024 University of Edinburgh spinout from Professor Robert Henderson's photonics lab, building SPAD image sensors that detect and timestamp individual photons — enabling capabilities no standard camera can touch: near-darkness imaging, millimetre-precision distance measurement, events too fast for conventional frames. Two product families are in the market across nine countries; the company has doubled 2025 revenues in 2026 to date and is approaching break-even. Dipesh Patel, former CTO of Arm, joins the board.
Aisel Health (Copenhagen) closed €1.7 million in a Pre-Seed led by Caesar Ventures, with Nordic Web Ventures, LifeX, Angel Invest, and existing investors Rockstart and EIFO. Founded in 2024 by Augusta Klingsten Peytz and Christian Houen, the company builds an AI clinical context system for psychiatry — surfacing structured insights from patient history, interview recordings, and prior documentation at point of care, with no patient data used to train models. UK private psychiatry is the first international market; a Seed round follows. The timing argument is real: psychiatric practice runs on unstructured language, which is precisely the domain where current LLMs are strongest, and the GDPR-native architecture is a defensibility claim that competitors who train on patient data cannot match.
