The week's thread — 9 August

9 rounds, ~€315M: 3–9 August. Volta's €259.8M dominates the headline; strip it out and the week's true early-stage signal is ~€55M across 8 rounds in 8 countries, with a genuine compute-infrastructure cluster.

The week ending 9 August produced 9 rounds and approximately €315 million. That number needs a footnote before anything else: €259.8 million of it — 82% — is Volta. Volta is labeled Seed and Series A, technically correctly, but it is an AI infrastructure development company backed by NVIDIA, Andreessen Horowitz, and Altimeter Capital at a $2.4 billion valuation. Strip Volta out and the week's early-stage signal is approximately €55 million across 8 rounds in 8 countries, which for the first full week of August is a solid, not quiet, result. Both numbers are true; neither one alone tells the story.

The compute-infrastructure cluster

Three of the week's nine companies are building the physical substrate that AI infrastructure requires.

Volta (London, €259.8 million, Seed and Series A; Azora, Andreessen Horowitz, Altimeter Capital, NVIDIA, Dell Family Office, Matter Venture Partners) finances, builds, and operates AI factories — GPU data centres funded via a hybrid of equity and Azora's €5 billion AI Infrastructure Programme. The first factory is 133 MW in Norway, built on NVIDIA Vera Rubin systems. The round is the largest Seed/Series A ProYarn has covered; it is also the most structurally unusual, closer to a renewable-energy developer's capital model than to a venture-backed startup. The label "Seed and Series A" is procedurally accurate and almost entirely uninformative.

Ore Energy (Amsterdam, €37.3 million, Series A; Plural and HV Capital co-lead, Positron Ventures) stores surplus renewable electricity for up to 100 hours using iron, water, and air — no lithium, no cobalt. Commercial agreement signed with Budget Thuis, pilot work underway with EDF. Plural moves from follower to co-lead in this round, having participated as an existing investor in Isometric's Series A the previous week — the sharpest signal of conviction in this summer's climate syndicate.

Exclaim Robotics (Zürich, €4.29 million, Pre-Seed; Founderful and Playfair co-lead) builds autonomous mobile robots for AI data centre maintenance, starting with break-fix tasks at the rack face. CEO Helen Oleynikova brings 15 years across Willow Garage, Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and ETH Zürich, including co-authorship of nvblox. The AI hardware connection is structural: next-generation data centres distribute power at 800 V DC, making routine maintenance hazardous enough to warrant robotic intervention. Playfair, which backed Astral Systems earlier this year, co-leads its second physical-autonomy bet.

Volta finances the factory. Ore Energy stores the energy that runs it. Exclaim Robotics maintains it. The three companies form an accidental supply chain — none founded with the others in mind, all writing cheques on the same physical constraint.

The rest of the week

Six rounds covered separate territory with no common thread.

conmeet (Borken, Germany, €6 million, Seed; Reimann Investors Venture Capital and Smedvig Ventures co-lead, May Ventures reinvest) builds an AI operating system for mid-sized DACH trades and construction businesses — unifying project management, procurement, scheduling, and invoicing on a shared data model. Oversubscribed six months after the May Ventures pre-seed.

SeeTrue Technologies (Joensuu, Finland, €2.2 million, financing round; ZEISS Ventures leads, Superhero Capital, North Karelia Growth Fund/Redstone Nordics, Luminate) is a University of Eastern Finland spinout with an ultra-low-power eye-sensing architecture designed for normal-looking glasses frames — solving the power-and-form-factor wall that has blocked eye-tracking from consumer wearables. ZEISS Ventures leading the round is the signal: Carl Zeiss AG supplies optics to the global spectacles industry and is involved in the lens systems of multiple AI-glasses programmes.

Relu (Leuven, Belgium, €1.51 million, strategic investment; Dental Innovation Alliance) is a follow-on from the DIA's 2023 lead — the same backer returning, not a new investor entering. Relu's AI platform automates the prosthetic design step in dental labs, shifting technicians from designer to reviewer to scale output without proportionally more headcount. Capital directed to US market development via the DIA's lab network.

Aavalynx (London, €1.75 million, Pre-Seed; Omega Ventures lead, Two Ravens) positions corporate dispute resolution as a financial risk category for the CFO — AI models that quantify dispute exposure so the CFO sees it before the GC bills for it. Founded in 2023 by dispute-resolution lawyer Hanna Roos.

Aflabox (Italy, €1.35 million, Seed; FoodSeed/Eatable Adventures lead, Farming Future) built a UV-imaging and AI device that detects aflatoxin and mycotoxin contamination in grain samples in under 90 seconds — for cooperative collection points, not laboratory facilities. Commercial targets are Kenya, Nigeria, and Italy. FoodSeed, which also co-invested in Nous Ingredients in July, makes its second ProYarn-covered agrifood commitment in six weeks.

Shiplog (Paris, €808K, Pre-Seed; Kima Ventures and Project Europe co-lead) builds Ada, an AI agent that evaluates each customer individually and chooses the next best action across the full customer lifecycle. France's only round of the week, at the smallest ticket.

The week in numbers

~€315 million (or ~€55 million ex-Volta) across 9 rounds in 8 countries. The United Kingdom led by capital — Volta's €259.8 million and Aavalynx's €1.75 million bring the UK total to approximately €261 million. The Netherlands placed the week's largest genuine early-stage round: Ore Energy's €37.3 million. Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Belgium, Italy, and France each contributed one round. France produced a single €808K pre-seed — its fourth consecutive week of minimal output, the grandes vacances effect holding through the first full week of August.

Stage distribution: one Series A (Ore Energy), one Seed and Series A (Volta), two Seeds (Aflabox, conmeet), three Pre-Seeds (Exclaim Robotics, Aavalynx, Shiplog), two with unstated stage (SeeTrue, Relu).

FoodSeed is the week's clearest cross-archive signal, backing Aflabox alongside its July Nous Ingredients commitment — a consistent agrifood thesis playing out across the summer. Plural moved from co-investor to co-lead between Isometric and Ore Energy within a single month. Playfair added Exclaim Robotics as a second physical-autonomy bet alongside Astral Systems from earlier in 2026.

The compute-infrastructure cluster is real and worth naming, but six of the nine rounds have nothing to do with it. The honest read: this week opened quiet on Monday, accelerated through Tuesday to Thursday, and quietened again by the weekend. The summer lull is intermittent, not continuous — and for an August that opened with concerns about a dead zone, that is the week's most useful data point.
