Relu lands €1.5M follow-on from US dental alliance to push its AI prosthetics design platform into the American market
A Leuven-based AI startup whose Relu Automate platform uses intraoral scan geometry to automatically generate dental prosthetic designs, letting labs scale output without proportionally increasing headcount.

Relu (Leuven) has received a €1.5 million (approximately $1.75 million) strategic investment from the Dental Innovation Alliance (DIA), a US-based network of dental laboratory owners and industry investors. The DIA previously led Relu's 2023 Seed round; this is a follow-on from the same backer, structured as a strategic rather than a standard equity round — the announcement does not state an explicit funding stage. The company was founded in 2019 by Holger Willems, Adriaan Van Gerven, Antoine Coppens, and Thomas Beznik, and builds an AI platform that automates the prosthetic design workflow inside dental laboratories.
The bottleneck in dental labs
Dental laboratories design and fabricate prosthetics — crowns, bridges, veneers, implant-retained restorations — that clinics order on behalf of patients. The standard workflow is largely manual: a technician receives an intraoral scan, designs the prosthetic geometry using CAD software calibrated to the patient's anatomy and opposing dentition, and hands the finished design to milling or 3D-printing fabrication. Skilled dental technicians are in short supply across both Europe and the United States, the design step is the most time-intensive part of the process, and demand for restorative dentistry is growing. The sector runs at near capacity, with per-unit costs that put dental care out of reach for a significant share of patients.
Relu Automate targets the design step: the platform ingests an intraoral scan, analyses the geometric context using AI models trained on prosthetics design data, and produces a draft that the technician reviews, adjusts if needed, and approves. The technician shifts from designer to reviewer — the productivity gain is in how many cases a single technician can process per day rather than in eliminating the technician entirely. Relu claims "multiples" of cases per technician per day; the specific figure and the methodology behind it are not corroborated by an independent source.
A US expansion bet from a Belgian base
The capital is directed toward US market development. DIA membership spans dental lab owners across the United States, and a strategic investment from the alliance is partly a distribution mechanism — DIA-member labs are the most immediately addressable market, and the existing relationship removes a cold-start problem. Whether the DIA investment converts into measurable adoption or remains primarily financial is not stated.

What the next 18 months must show: whether Relu's productivity claims hold across the full case complexity a US lab handles — AI-assisted crown design is well-trodden territory, but implant-retained full-arch restorations are materially harder to automate credibly, and US labs run the full spectrum. The absence of European market development from the stated plan is worth noting: a Belgian company seven years into building a product for dental labs is choosing to lead with a market across the Atlantic rather than the one it operates in. That is a deliberate bet on where the DIA relationship converts faster, not evidence that the European opportunity is closed.
