“We founded Rivercell to solve the target identification bottleneck that kills so many drug programmes before they start. This funding lets us do that at scale.”
Yann Fleureau — CEO, Rivercell

Rivercell (Paris) has raised €22 million in a Seed round led by HV Capital, with HCVC, Alven, and Bpifrance Digital Venture participating. The company was founded in 2026 by Yann Fleureau (CEO) and Eric Durand to tackle drug discovery's most persistent failure mode: choosing the wrong molecular target before a programme starts.

The bottleneck Rivercell is targeting

Every drug programme begins with target identification: which protein, pathway, or cellular mechanism, when modulated, produces a therapeutic effect? The answer requires integrating evidence from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics — datasets that have grown dramatically in the last decade but remain siloed across academic databases, proprietary repositories, and clinical records in formats that don't talk to each other.

Rivercell's platform connects these multi-omics layers and runs molecular simulations against them to score candidate targets before wet-lab validation. The claim is speed and specificity: by narrowing the candidate space computationally — and by modelling how drug molecules would actually interact with candidate targets — the platform reduces the volume of wet-lab experiments required to reach a credible shortlist. Bold targets and lower attrition is the stated outcome; the evidence for that will come from the oncology and neurology pipeline Rivercell is building with this Seed capital.

Why the investors moved early

Seed rounds at €22 million are not the norm in European biotech — or anywhere. The size reflects the platform's computational infrastructure requirements: multi-omics at scale demands significant data engineering and compute before a single target candidate can be validated. HV Capital's lead is notable given the firm's recent activity in deep-infrastructure bets: its Series A in Ore Energy (Amsterdam, long-duration iron-air storage) last August signals appetite for capital-intensive frontier technology, though the sector shift from climate hardware to computational biology is pronounced.

HCVC, which specialises in deep tech and biotech at the early stage, and Alven, one of France's most active Series A investors, add both scientific credibility and future-round signalling. Bpifrance Digital Venture's participation links Rivercell into France's national innovation system.

"We founded Rivercell to solve the target identification bottleneck that kills so many drug programmes before they start," said Fleureau. "This funding lets us do that at scale."

What the next 18 months look like

The Seed capital funds platform buildout and two initial indication bets: oncology and neurology. Both offer the richest available omics datasets and the clearest unmet clinical need, which makes them the right proving ground for a platform that has not yet produced a publicly validated candidate. The company will expand its R&D team — the next hire is expected to span computational biology, structural bioinformatics, and wet-lab partnerships.

The honest test is prediction accuracy: a target the platform surfaces must be one a biology team would have found anyway, but faster. Until there is wet-lab data on the platform's hit rate, the €22M is a bet on the founders' ability to build something that has not been publicly demonstrated. That is what Seed rounds are for — but in drug discovery, the stakes of a misdirected bet are measured in years, not months.
