Restate raises $20M Series A to make AI agent infrastructure durable
Builds durable execution infrastructure that keeps AI agents, workflows, and distributed services reliable across failures — operating as a layer across services, agents, and state.
“Durable execution solved an important problem: it made individual processes reliable. But software is increasingly made up of services, agents, workflows, and state that all need to stay reliable as they interact. We believe durability has to become a property of the infrastructure itself.”
Restate (Berlin) has raised $20 million in a Series A (approximately €18.5 million), led by Singular, the European venture firm, with Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures participating. The round brings total funding to $27 million and will fund product development and a US commercial expansion from San Francisco.
The company builds what it calls durable execution infrastructure — a middleware layer that makes AI agents, workflows, services, and state machines reliably resilient across crashes, restarts, and partial failures. The core claim: rather than requiring each application team to engineer fault-tolerance into their own code, Restate embeds that guarantee into the infrastructure itself.
Why reliability is the next AI infrastructure problem
As AI systems move from single-agent experiments to multi-agent production deployments, the failure modes multiply. A single agent that crashes is an annoyance; a coordinated workflow of five agents where one silently fails mid-run, corrupts shared state, and triggers a cascade is a production incident. Existing durable execution solutions address individual processes; Restate targets the interaction layer — across services, agents, and persistent state — as a unified reliability guarantee.
The founding team's backgrounds matter here. Stephan Ewen, CEO, is co-creator of Apache Flink, the stream processing framework deployed in over 200 million instances globally. Till Rohrmann also has a Flink background; Ahmed Forghal held engineering leadership roles at Stripe and Meta. Igal Shilman rounds out the technical founding group. The team left enterprise AI infrastructure positions to solve a problem they diagnosed from the inside.
Capital One as a signal
The presence of Capital One Ventures as a corporate investor is worth noting. Financial services infrastructure running AI agents has among the strictest reliability requirements in any industry — a compliance agent that drops a step mid-execution is not a debugging problem, it is a regulatory event. Capital One's participation suggests the infrastructure is credible for that tier of deployment, which is also the tier that pays infrastructure-level pricing.
Restate will use the Series A to deepen the product, grow the San Francisco commercial operation, and build US enterprise relationships. The EU base stays in Berlin.
