Metal Morph raises £700K pre-seed to close the loop on water treatment chemicals

Metal Morph (London) has raised £700,000 / approximately €820,000 in pre-seed funding co-led by Sustainable Ventures and Green Angel Ventures, with Aqcelerator and Found Capital participating. The company was founded in 2025 by Moletsane Mophethe, who grew up in Lesotho and experienced water scarcity firsthand. Metal Morph builds infrastructure that recovers aluminium and iron-based coagulant chemicals from water and wastewater treatment plants, returning them to the same treatment process rather than discharging them to landfill, sewer, or land application.

The problem with the coagulant supply chain

Water treatment depends on aluminium and iron-based coagulants to gather and remove phosphorus and heavy metals before clean water can be released. The economics of the supply chain have long been unfavourable: treatment plants buy the chemicals, use them once, then pay again to dispose of the spent residue. Import disruptions — documented shocks to aluminium and iron chemical supply in 2026 — and tightening EU and US regulations are making an already costly system more exposed.

Metal Morph's process works in four stages: acid leaching of target metals, passage through an ion exchange membrane, nanofiltration for acid reuse, and recycling of the recovered coagulants back into the treatment process. The results, drawn from more than 50 live tests across three drinking water treatment plants: 90% recovery of spent treatment chemicals at 95% purity, a 26% reduction in coagulation-related operational costs, and an 89% reduction in emissions associated with coagulant procurement.

Six utilities, 56% of the UK water market

The technology validation has produced an unusual commercial position for a pre-seed company. Metal Morph has signed partnerships with six UK water utilities collectively covering 56% of the UK water market, including Thames Water and Anglian Water. Alongside the equity round, the company has been awarded a £100,000 grant from Ofwat, the UK water regulator's Water Discovery Challenge, with a further £450,000 available as milestones are met — bringing the combined current and conditional support to £1.25 million.

Mophethe was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering's 2024 Leaders in Innovation Fellowship; Metal Morph has been named a finalist in the Royal Society of Chemistry's Emerging Technologies competition. The nine-person team draws on backgrounds from Arup, Bloomberg, British Water, Deep Science Ventures, Imperial, and Stanford.

The pre-seed capital and the Ofwat grant fund commercial pilots and further validation with utility partners. Beyond the UK, Metal Morph is in advanced discussions with Accelerate Estonia and with Aquafin, the Belgian utility that handles 60% of household wastewater treatment in that country. The 18-month question is not whether the technology works — the pilot data has already answered that — but whether utility procurement cycles can move fast enough to turn six existing partnerships into the first commercial deployments.
