Matters raises $5M pre-seed for its AI-native neobank built on a flat monthly fee
A Stockholm-based AI-native personal banking platform that charges a flat monthly fee and returns card and currency transaction revenue to customers as cashback, rather than monetising through interchange and FX margins.
Matters (Stockholm) has raised $5M — approximately €4.5M — in a pre-seed round. The round was anchored by angel Jakob Johansson. Named participants include Knut Frängsmyr, former COO of Klarna, and Douglas Stark, co-founder of Voi. No institutional VC lead was named.
The company was founded by Per Österström, who previously built Sambla Group, a leading Scandinavian financial comparison platform, and Lars-Åke Norling, former CEO of Nordnet.
The model
Matters' premise is a structural critique of how neobanks currently make money. Revolut, Monzo, and comparable platforms monetise primarily through interchange fees (a percentage of card spend) and FX margins. The user experience is positioned as cost-transparent, but the underlying economics depend on volume-driven margin.
Matters charges a flat monthly fee instead, and returns the card and currency transaction revenue it generates to customers as cashback. The claim is a genuinely different alignment: the bank's revenue is fixed regardless of customer behaviour; every transaction earns the customer something rather than the bank.
The AI layer — whose exact capabilities have not been fully specified at this stage — is described as a personal financial adviser built into the banking product, not bolted on top. The combination of a restructured fee model and AI-native advisory is the founding thesis.
The round and the path forward
The $5M is early-stage capital for a company that has not yet launched. The primary use is pursuing banking licence applications across the EU — a process that typically requires 18–36 months and significant regulatory capital before a product can reach consumers.
Österström and Norling bring complementary track records. Sambla Group (Per Österström) serves over a million Scandinavian consumers in the loan comparison category, a market that requires direct-to-consumer distribution at scale. Nordnet (Lars-Åke Norling) is a regulated brokerage and banking platform across Scandinavia — an institutional formation rather than a startup background.
The angel participants bring specific fintech and consumer platform density: Frängsmyr built operational infrastructure at Klarna during its growth phase; Stark's experience at Voi — building consumer subscription products in regulated European markets — is operationally adjacent to what Matters is attempting. The $5M pre-seed is small for a neobank ambition; the next round will need to be substantially larger to cover regulatory capital requirements.
