finmid raises €17M Series A extension to scale embedded lending for B2B platforms
A Berlin embedded finance startup that lets B2B platforms and marketplaces offer working-capital loans to their merchant base — enabling a Wolt, Delivery Hero or logistics marketplace to provide credit without a banking licence.
“Every B2B platform sits on an underserved lending opportunity. finmid's infrastructure unlocks it without the platform needing a banking licence.”
finmid (Berlin) has raised €17 million in a Series A extension led by Earlybird, with Big Pi Ventures, Blossom Capital, and Mainset participating. Co-founded in 2021 by Max Schertel (CEO) and N26 co-founder alumni, finmid builds embedded lending infrastructure for B2B platforms and marketplaces. The round was announced alongside a new Bolt vehicle-financing partnership.
Embedded lending as the next fintech layer
The embedded finance thesis has proven itself in two areas: payments (Stripe, Adyen) and increasingly insurance (simple API-based cover added to purchase flows). The next frontier is working capital — specifically, the liquidity that merchants on B2B platforms need between when they deliver goods or services and when the platform pays them.
The opportunity is visible in the data every marketplace already has. Wolt knows which restaurant is processing €200,000 a month through its platform and has a three-year performance history; Delivery Hero knows which dark-kitchen operator's order volumes are trending. Traditional SME lenders ask for bank statements and two years of filed accounts. finmid asks for platform access to the transactional data both sides already possess.
The infrastructure finmid provides covers the full lending stack: credit decisioning (using transactional data from the platform), regulatory infrastructure (finmid holds the regulated lending licence, so the platform does not need to), loan servicing, and collections. The platform partner earns revenue share; its merchants get working capital without leaving the platform experience.
The Bolt deal and what it signals
The Bolt vehicle-financing partnership — announced simultaneously with the raise — is finmid's most visible new vertical to date. Mobility platform partnerships (financing for drivers or fleet operators) represent a different buyer profile from restaurant and logistics marketplaces, and Bolt's European scale (45+ countries) means the partnership can generate volume quickly.
"Every B2B platform sits on an underserved lending opportunity," said Schertel. "finmid's infrastructure unlocks it without the platform needing a banking licence."
Earlybird and the extension
Earlybird, which backed QuantumDiamonds in quantum sensing hardware, leads here in a different sector. The 'Series A extension' label means exactly what it says: finmid has spent its original Series A validating the model with anchor platform clients, and is now deploying a further tranche to scale the go-to-market team and add platform partnerships. At this point in the finmid story, revenue and retention are more relevant than the round label: the €17M is notable because Earlybird is leading an extension, which implies the lead believes the original Series A thesis is intact.
