The wire — 24 October 2026

Four rounds across three countries. Three of the four are infrastructure bets for an AI-native world; the fourth is a reminder that the most impactful application of AI this week may be returning 165,000 hours to teachers.

Photon Bridge (Eindhoven, €10 million) enters Saturday's wire as a carry-forward from Tuesday: the round closed October 21 but reached the desk with a delay. The company — formerly Photon IP — is solving a supply problem nobody is talking about yet. AI data centres transitioning to co-packaged optics will need millions of laser sources annually; the current supply chain was sized for telecom volumes measured in tens of thousands. Photon Bridge's architectural answer is multiplexing: lower-power-density lasers arrayed together, higher yield, compatible with existing InP foundries. Amadeus APEX Technology Fund and 360 Capital co-lead; Innovation Industries, Faber, and the Brabant Development Agency increase existing stakes. First samples in 2027, volume manufacturing from 2028.

Cygrid (Berlin, €2.66M Pre-Seed, Atlantic lead) exits stealth after nine months and 19 design partners — six already in production. The thesis is post-authentication enforcement: IAM tells you who can log in; Cygrid tells you what they may do next, in real time, across human users, service accounts, and AI agents. Palo Alto Networks counts 109 machine identities for every human one, 79 of them AI agents; CrowdStrike's 2026 report finds 82% of detections involve no malware, just a trusted identity misused. Founders Dmitry Kharchenko (CEO) and Dekel Paz come from Israeli Military Intelligence. D11Z.Ventures and a syndicate of angels from Zscaler, bonify, and AmberVale Capital round out the investor group.

Weflayr (Paris, $2.5M Pre-Seed, 13books Capital lead) is the model router play: a gateway that sits between enterprise applications and the model layer, routing each query to the best-fitting model on quality, cost, and sovereignty criteria. Founded by Romain Mazeries — former CEO of Mangopay — who draws the parallel to payment routing explicitly. First production deployment cut AI costs 55% at equivalent quality. Stripe's acquisition of OpenRouter for a reported $7.5 billion sets the market ceiling; Weflayr's differentiation is the EU-sovereignty layer for enterprises that cannot use a US-based routing layer. Founders Future, Kima Ventures, Plug and Play Ventures, Station F Venture, and angel Roxanne Varza also participated. 13books Capital's second known French bet after Aria.

Intuitivo (Porto, €1.35M Seed, co-led by Caixa Capital and the Impact Innovation Fund) is the standout from the AI infrastructure thread. OECD's TALIS 2024 survey found Portugal's teachers spend more time on assessment and grading than educators in any of the other 43 countries studied. Intuitivo's answer: a platform that builds, auto-grades, and monitors assessments at all education levels, with AI converting legacy PDF tests into interactive digital versions. 75,000 registered teachers, 500+ schools, 165,000 working hours returned in the 2025/26 school year. The round funds a team doubling (11 to 20) and a Brazil launch — 2.2 million teachers, twelve times Portugal's, in a market where a Portuguese-language platform has a distribution advantage English-first competitors do not.
