The wire — 27 August 2026
Thursday produces nothing of its own: no rounds announced on 27 August have cleared the two-source corroboration threshold as of filing time. The sweep does turn up two rounds from the week's backlog — one from Tuesday 25 August, one from Wednesday 26 — that previous editions missed. They share a country and nothing else; no single theme connects deep-tech battery chemistry with institutional AI portfolio management, and forcing one would misrepresent both.
Certain Energy (London, formerly RFC Power, £10 million / €11.6M Series A, led by British Business Bank) is an Imperial College spinout rebranding alongside its raise. It makes manganese flow batteries for grid-scale storage: 20-year designed operating life, materials costs targeting a tenth of vanadium equivalents, and a deployment strategy built around a grid-connected MWh-class demonstration system in India — a market where grid instability is an active commercial problem rather than a policy goal. Centrica participates as a strategic investor, which means a major UK energy operator has attested to the technology's grid-integration pathway. Ceres Power Holdings, the former parent, stays invested through the rebrand — unusual enough to signal genuine technological continuity rather than a clean-break spin-out. Temasek Trust's C3H adds a development-finance dimension consistent with the India project's patient capital timeline.
Itoflow (London, $2.5 million Pre-Seed, led by Balderton Capital, with angel Barney Hussey-Yeo) was founded in 2026 by CEO Aditya Jha — nine years of quantitative research at JPMorgan, RBC, and Tower Research Capital — and builds AI research and portfolio management agents for professional investment firms. The product ingests market intelligence from the fragmented data sources that fund managers currently navigate separately (terminal data, earnings calls, internal models, research PDFs) and surfaces analysis continuously. Balderton, writing a pre-seed cheque earlier than its typical entry, is betting on founding-team credibility over product traction. The go-to-market constraint is compliance: connecting AI agents to regulated portfolio positions requires operational risk sign-off that has quietly blocked credible investment-AI products before.
One thread runs across this week's entire ProYarn coverage. The British Business Bank has now appeared in two separate forms: its UK Sovereign AI Fund made the first disclosed investment in Callosum on 20 August, and a separate BBB vehicle leads Certain Energy's Series A on 26 August. Two sectors, two weeks, one institutional umbrella — the shape of a deliberate infrastructure mandate rather than coincidence.
