The wire — 18 August 2026
Two separate threads today. The first: August 18 itself was quiet — no qualifying Seed or Series A round reached the desk from France or the rest of Europe by press time, consistent with the post-Assumption week that has kept the wire dark since 14 August. The second: one pickup clears a gap from the August 17 sweep.
amber (Aachen) raised €7 million in a Series A co-led by Ventech and NRW.Venture to push its AI knowledge platform for SMEs from retrieval toward autonomous task execution. The round was announced Sunday but not captured in the August 17 quiet-desk run. The Ventech co-lead carries context: the fund also led Naaia's Série A in July — an AI governance platform for EU Act compliance — marking two consecutive enterprise AI infrastructure bets from the same fund within six weeks. amber's first expansion target is Benelux, where its Aachen base gives it a natural geographic starting point.
The day's off-scope headline is Gravis Robotics: the Zurich-based construction automation company raised €172 million in what it labels a Series A — the round was led by SoftBank alone and gives the company an €862 million post-money valuation. At that size and structure, it sits far outside ProYarn's early-stage bracket and will not receive a deal story, but it is the week's most consequential European deep-tech announcement and the fund-raising benchmark the sector will measure itself against for the rest of the year.
