“UK financial advice is drowning in compliance paperwork. PlannerPal automates everything that gets in the way of advisers actually advising.”
Mark Whitcroft — CEO, PlannerPal

PlannerPal (London) has raised $6 million / ~€5.4 million led by Mercia Ventures, with Ada Ventures and strategic fintech investors participating. Founded by Mark Whitcroft (CEO), PlannerPal automates compliance documentation for UK independent financial advisers — suitability assessments, client recommendation letters, annual review reports, and regulatory filing records. The stage is unstated.

The paperwork problem in UK financial advice

UK financial advice is one of the most compliance-intensive service professions in the country. The FCA's Consumer Duty requirements, suitability obligations, and record-keeping rules mean that every client interaction generates documentation obligations: a file note, a suitability letter, a recommendation, an annual review. The documentation must demonstrate that the advice was appropriate to the client's circumstances, risk profile, and stated objectives. Getting it wrong — or failing to produce it — carries regulatory risk.

The first wave of AI tools targeting this market focused on meeting transcription: a tool joins the adviser's call or meeting, transcribes the conversation, and produces a summary. That solves a real problem (eliminating manual note-taking) but leaves the harder step intact: turning the meeting content into the regulated output the adviser must actually produce and file. A suitability assessment has a structure, a regulatory standard, and a compliance bar; a meeting transcript does not automatically become one.

Beyond the transcript

PlannerPal's product takes the transcript layer as input and produces the compliance document layer as output — combining meeting content with client data (portfolio holdings, risk profile, investment objectives) and the applicable regulatory framework to generate the suitability letter, the review report, the recommendation. The adviser reviews and amends before filing; the generation step is automated.

"UK financial advice is drowning in compliance paperwork," said Whitcroft. "PlannerPal automates everything that gets in the way of advisers actually advising."

Mercia's lead and the regional market

Mercia Ventures, headquartered in Birmingham, leads — an unusual investor base for a London fintech. The choice signals that PlannerPal's addressable market is not just the London IFA community (which is well-served by B2B fintech vendors) but the wider UK adviser population, including the regional and national firms that are Mercia's natural network. Ada Ventures' participation adds a diversity-conscious angel and early-stage network.

The $6M / €5.4M funds product expansion (more document types, deeper integration with adviser back-office systems), engineering headcount (AI and compliance domain expertise), and sales coverage across the UK adviser market.
