The audit profession is about to undergo one of the biggest shifts in its history. AI will transform how audits are executed, but it will also raise the bar for quality, consistency, and professional oversight.

Berlin-based Cortea has raised a €12 million seed round led by Dawn Capital, with Cherry Ventures, Mosaic Ventures and angels including Larry Bradley, the former Global Head of Audit at KPMG. The company used the announcement to launch its first Audit Quality Agents.

Checking the checkers

Cortea's product sits one step back from the audit itself. Rather than performing an audit, its agents review it — cross-checking figures across audit reports, financial statements, disclosure notes and workpapers before sign-off, and flagging inconsistencies, missing information and Companies House filing discrepancies in minutes rather than days.

Developed with leading UK and European audit firms, the agents are pitched at a profession under unusual pressure: regulators are tightening, talent is scarce, and every firm is now experimenting with AI inside a process where a wrong number is not a typo but a liability. Cortea's wager, in co-founder and CEO Valentin Neumann's framing, is that the firms that win will be the ones that pair AI's speed with the rigour the work demands.

Early traction

The company, founded in 2024 by Neumann and Philipp Hövelmann, says that during the most recent audit season its technology helped deliver more than 4,000 audit reports, identified issues in every file it reviewed, and saved auditors several days of manual review per engagement — the kind of concrete, hours-saved metric that lands well with the mid-market and Big Four alike.

The seed funds more audit agents, deeper integrations with the major audit platforms, and expansion across the UK, Germany and the United States. It is also a tidy example of the quarter's quieter story: while AI megadeals dominate the headlines, a layer of un-glamorous, vertical B2B AI — audit, compliance, the back office — is where a lot of the durable early-stage building is actually happening.
