Backbone (Brussels) has raised €4 million in a pre-seed round led by Pitchdrive, with participation from PROfounders Capital, Passion Capital, 100IN, and two Belgian food companies — Agristo and Darta — whose strategic investment makes them both backers and potential reference customers. The capital goes toward European expansion, engineering hires, and a stated target of 250 deployed food production sites by end-2028.

Backbone was founded in 2025 by Louis Opsomer, Siska Lannoo, and Julien Steel, all formerly of Henchman, a Belgian legal-tech company that automated document-heavy workflows in law firms. The shift from legal to food compliance follows a recognisable pattern: both are regulated industries where compliance workflows are high-volume, document-intensive, and almost entirely manual at the mid-market level.

What Backbone automates

A mid-size food manufacturer — a frozen goods producer, a dairy, a ready-meal operation — manages quality and compliance across several concurrent processes: tracking supplier documentation (certifications, specifications, audit reports) for potentially hundreds of ingredients, recording and investigating quality incidents on production lines, filing reports to national food safety authorities, and maintaining the evidence trail that a regulatory inspection or a retailer audit would require.

Backbone's platform consolidates those workflows into a single AI-powered system: supplier tracking, incident management, document control, compliance analysis, and regulatory filing — replacing the patchwork of Excel files, email chains, and paper binders that characterise mid-market food manufacturing quality management today.

Strategic investors as reference accounts

The participation of Agristo and Darta — both Belgian food production companies — is not incidental. In a B2B category where a new software vendor's credibility depends entirely on reference accounts, having industrial food producers as investors is a more effective proof-of-concept than any pilot deployment metric. The implicit claim is that Backbone's platform is already doing real work in real food production environments, not just in controlled pilots.

Pitchdrive leads with a track record in early-stage Belgian B2B software; Passion Capital brings London-based enterprise software networks; PROfounders Capital has backed mid-market SaaS in regulated industries before. The syndicate is constructed for a European rollout, not a Belgian-only product.

At €4M pre-seed, Backbone has enough runway to establish two or three reference accounts that can serve as proof points for the broader European mid-market — the 100-to-500-employee food manufacturers for whom a €1M enterprise QMS is out of reach but a food recall would be existential.
