The wire — 18 July 2026

Two rounds announced on Friday 17 July ran past Thursday's closing window. They share no connecting thread — different countries, different sectors, different investors. The desk runs them largest to smallest.

ENGO (€5.1 million, stage unstated, co-led by Ventech / Odyssée Venture / Bpifrance Amorçage Industriel) is a Grenoble startup spun out of MICROOLED — a precision near-eye display manufacturer with a production heritage in scopes and night-vision systems — that makes AR glasses for endurance athletes. The product claim rests on the difference between a smart frame and a heads-up display: most connected sports glasses collect and relay data to an app; ENGO's Micro-OLED module projects pace, heart rate, power output, and navigation directly into the athlete's field of view, readable in daylight, without requiring them to look away from the road. The glasses weigh under 40 grams and last up to 20 hours. The company already generates 90% of revenue outside France, with the United States accounting for roughly half — evidence of product-market fit that predates this round. The €5.1 million goes to 20 new hires and miniaturisation R&D. Ventech, having backed Paris AI-governance platform Naaia and enterprise learning company Mendo in the same month, makes a distinctly different bet here — hardware, not software.

Sightera Biosciences (€3 million, Pre-Seed, co-led by Entourage / Anacura / QBIC) is an Antwerp biotech that formally spun out of the University of Antwerp and Antwerp University Hospital in January 2026. Where most AI drug discovery platforms begin with a chemical target and test molecules in patient biology second, Sightera inverts the sequence: tissue samples from treatment-resistant patients — extreme biology, in the company's framing — are grown into organoids, subjected to high-throughput drug screening, and the response data trains an AI that then designs new small molecules calibrated to that specific biology. The lead programme is SIGHT001, a molecular glue compound targeting oncology. CEO Hendrik Vercammen makes no ambiguity about what this round is purchasing: "We are currently preparing a larger financing round to take our lead programme SIGHT001 into clinical trials" — the €3 million buys the preclinical candidate selection milestone that is the necessary prior step. The unusual investor is Entourage, a Ghent early-stage fund that ordinarily backs B2B software.

ENGO (Grenoble, €5.1M, stage unstated, co-led by Ventech / Odyssée Venture / Bpifrance Amorçage Industriel; Blueprint Partners). Sightera Biosciences (Antwerp, €3M Pre-Seed, co-led by Entourage / Anacura / QBIC).
